Event Details

In partnership with Philips Experience Design and ELISAVA (Barcelona School of Design and Engineering) we are organising a Service Design Challenge for Social Change. This challenge is part of Dutch Design Week 2019 in the city of Eindhoven. You will meet designers from all over the world to propose solutions to a real-world design challenge presented by an innovative and forward-thinking organisation, namely Philips.

It’s a unique event that allows a limited group of participants, who want to design products and services with lasting impact, to put design theories and methodologies into practice in a collaborative setting. Experts from ELISAVA, TU Delft and IDEO.org will let you dive deeper into the challenge with the use of systems thinking for service design. You will practice a systemic design approach to come up with sustainable service solutions.

Why join this challenge?

We live in unprecedented times. The challenges we face are extraordinarily complex. The problems aren’t the same as before, nor the approaches to find and design possible solutions. What does this mean for nowadays’ designers? How to add value to people and planet? And move away from isolated product and service design interventions to engage with societal challenges?

Improving well-being is one of those challenges. For improving people’s well-being, we need to expand our focus from designing for the individual to finding solutions for collective needs with the interlinked social context in mind. For that, we can use integrated systems approaches. With a holistic perspective on people's lives and needs, and a thorough understanding of their ecosystems, we can aim for long lasting impact. That is why we have composed this full-day challenge especially for creative experts who care about positive change and want to practice a framework and a unique set of methods that enable them to learn, innovate, and adapt to a complex and dynamic environment.

Key takeaways

  • You will be introduced to systemic design principles by professors at TU Delft and ELISAVA.
  • You will explore ways to frame a so-called wicked problem and its complex and interlinked context with the use of a real-life challenge presented by experts from Philips Experience Design and Research.
  • During an intensive workshop, lead by a team from IDEO.org and ELISAVA, you will learn how to combine methods from service design, design thinking and systems thinking to facilitate behavioural change and lead you towards successful social innovation.
  • You will band together with other designers and focus on the intersection of systems perspectives and strategic design.
  • You will reflect on your role as a designer in developing valuable responses to human and societal problems and obtain new insights how to achieve change for the better as a designer.
