Welcome to the Sex Journal Club!

The Sex Journal Club is a monthly event for anyone interested in the science of sex, sexuality, and sexual health. Each session features a recent paper in the field of sexology, and we invite the author to join us for an open and interactive discussion. The author will begin by presenting their work, followed by a discussion focused on the topic or a specific aspect of the paper.

This is a great opportunity to stay up to date with current research, ask questions directly to the author, and explore the broader implications of their findings.

Whether you're a researcher, clinician, student, or simply curious, you're warmly invited to join our event!

What is this month topic?

In honour of Asexuality Awareness Week, we are pleased to welcome Prof. Dr. Canton Winer to the Sex Journal Club, where he will present his recent work:

Winer, C. (2024). Understanding asexuality: A sociological review. Sociology Compass, 18(6), e13240.

About the author:

Canton Winer, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Sociology and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Northern Illinois University. His research explores (a)sexuality, gender, masculinities, inclusion/exclusion, and culture, with a particular focus on how asexuality can serve as a strategic site for deconstructing gender and sexuality.

Dr. Winer is recognized as a leading sociologist of asexuality and an important voice in asexuality studies. His research has received multiple national awards, including three from the American Sociological Association, such as the 2025 Distinguished Article Award from the ASA Sexualities Section for his work on the relationship between bisexuality and asexuality.

His methodological approach is primarily qualitative, using interviews, focus groups, discourse analysis, and digital ethnography to explore the intersections of sexuality, gender, and culture.
