Silent Book Club II

De Silent Book Club is een boekenclub die ruimte geeft om op je eigen tempo te lezen. Omdat de boekenclub in de buitenlucht plaatsvindt, worden alle omgevingsgeluiden onderdeel van de leeservaring. Deze boekenclub is dan ook geïnspireerd op het idee van John Cage waarin stilte niet echt bestaat, en op Pierre Schaeffer’s interpretatie van dagelijks geluid als muziek. Zo wordt de leeservaring ook een luisterervaring van de geluiden bij het Open Paviljoen op het Spuiplein.

Je mag zelf een boek meenemen. Er is geen voorgeschreven tekst of thema, want het gaat om de concentratie, de reflectie en het bewustzijn die ontstaan door het gezamenlijk in stilte lezen. Je mag zelf komen en gaan wanneer je wilt.

De Silent Book Club wordt georganiseerd door Kristina Petković, kunsthistorica en museoloog. Ze doet onderzoek naar de muzikale eigenschappen van stilte en omgevingsgeluid, en naar marxistische benaderingen van culturele instellingen.

Het Open Paviljoen is een plek voor ontmoeting, uitwisseling en verbeelding. Van 13 juni tot en met 19 juli 2026 bieden we ruimte aan een cultureel programma met workshops, gesprekken, performances en lezingen. Lokale initiatieven, nationale stemmen en internationale denkers ontmoeten elkaar in een open setting waarin kunst niet alleen wordt getoond, maar actief onze samenleving vormt.

The Silent Book Club is a book club that offers space to read at your own pace. Because the book club takes place outdoors, all surrounding sounds become part of the reading experience. The club is inspired by John Cage’s idea that true silence does not exist, and by Pierre Schaeffer’s interpretation of everyday sound as music. In this way, the reading experience also becomes a listening experience, shaped by the sounds around the open paviljoen at the Spuiplein.

You are welcome to bring your own book. There is no prescribed text or theme, as the focus is on the concentration, reflection, and awareness that emerge through reading together in silence. You are free to arrive and leave whenever you wish.

The Silent Book Club is organized by Kristina Petković, an art historian and museologist. Her research explores the musical qualities of silence and environmental sound, as well as Marxist approaches to cultural institutions.

The Open Paviljoen is a place for encounter, exchange, and imagination. From 13 June to 19 July 2026, it will host a cultural program featuring workshops, conversations, performances, and lectures. Local initiatives, national voices, and international thinkers come together in an open setting where art is not only presented, but actively shapes our society.
