Society and Altered States: Philosophy Salon
We often think of psychedelics as having individual effects. One experiences hallucinations or undergoes a powerful experience that changes something deep inside. Historically, however, psychedelics had a strong communal element - taken within a group and experienced as a collective. In societies that are deeply individualistic, many such interactions would then be lost. This Philosophy Salon is about the lost effects of psychedelics. What is their impact not just on the individuals but on groups? Can we explain this effect in terms of set and setting? What is the place in a society for altered states?
