Society and Altered States: Philosophy Salon
Can practices centered on altered states make society better? We often think of psychedelics as having an effect on a single person - one sees hallucinations or has an intense experience that changes something deep inside. Historically, however, psychedelics have been communal - taken within a collective and experienced as a group. So, in societies that are deeply individualistic, many of these powerful effects are lost. In this Philosophy Salon, we will talk about the lost effects of psychedelics. What is their impact not just on the individuals but on groups? Can we explain their effect on groups in terms of "set" and "setting"? Are the insights delivered by psychedelic experiences compatible with how society works?
