Lecture: Soil and people connected through different perspectives - a soil biologist's journey
Join us at the ISRIC World Soil Museum for an insightful lunch lecture by Giulia Bongiorno, a lecturer and researcher at Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands.
About the speaker
Giulia Bongiorno is a lecturer and researcher in the Soil Biology (SBL) group at WUR. She completed her PhD at the SBL group in collaboration with FIBL (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture) in Switzerland, where she worked for three years. Afterwards, she returned to the SBL group to continue with her work on the soil.
Her work focuses on the role of soil biota in soil processes and functions, as well as monitoring the effect of agricultural practices and land use management on soils. Giulia has primarily worked in agricultural systems within and outside Europe, from arables and perennials to agroforestry.
Over the years, her work ignited her interest in the role of agriculture in the broader economic and societal context and in the importance of soil literacy, outreach and multidisciplinary projects and collaborations. Since March 2020, she has been increasingly involved in outreach efforts, and since March 2024 she also serves as an outreach supporter of the WUR Soil Science Cluster, carrying out various activities with different stakeholders and collaborating across disciplines to help bring people closer to soil, with the final aim to increase soil care and soil health.
