Spring Equinox Masquerade - A confrontation with the monstrous: unsettling the status quo through storytelling, mask making, and performative actions on the street!

The spring equinox marks the beginning of spring. Day and night have the same length and afterwards the sunlight hours will be longer than those of darkness. The equinox is a celebration of transformation, of life returning to the sleepy world. A moment of rebirth, when seeds for the year ahead are being planted and the darkness is banished.

What kind of creatures are roaming the streets during this time of transformation? What will we be reborn as, transformed into, that is scary enough to chase the demons of winter away? Come join us for this celebration of the coming sunlight and speculation on the monstrous as a tool of resistance. We will create our own monsters through reflection, visualisation, mask making and movement exercises that will reclaim the streets in a terrifying parade.

The event will start with a collective meal. Afterwards, there will be a facilitated discussion on our relationship to monsters and their role in different cultural contexts. Together, we will reflect on the transformative potential of the monstrous in relation to our own fears and desires, which are often affected by larger political infrastructures. We will create our own monsters in a visualization exercise.

Afterward, we will give shape to our monsters by creating masks. For this, we invite you to bring materials you associate with rebirth and transformation. Feel free to bring rests from your home, like fabric scraps, shells, and bottle caps. Through movement exercises, we will let our monsters come to life and explore the way our monsters move and interact with each other. The event will culminate in a carnivalesque procession through the neighborhood. We will engage in playful experiments in public space, and invite passers-by to join along. We will end with a collective reflection.

Lente Equinox Masquerade - Een confrontatie met het monsterlijke: de status quo ontwrichten door middel van verhalen vertellen, maskers maken en performatieve acties op straat!

De lente-equinox markeert het begin van de lente. Dag en nacht hebben dezelfde lengte en daarna gaan de zonuren langer zijn dan die van de duisternis. De equinox is een feest van transformatie, van leven dat terugkeert in de slaperige wereld. Een moment van wedergeboorte, waarop de zaden voor het komende jaar worden geplant en de duisternis wordt verbannen.

Wat voor wezens zwerven er rond in deze tijd van transformatie? Als wat worden we herboren, getransformeerd, dat verschrikkelijk genoeg is om de demonen van de winter te verjagen? Kom met ons mee naar deze viering van het komende zonlicht en speculatie over het monsterlijke als middel van verzet. We creëren onze eigen monsters door middel van reflectie, visualisatie, het maken van maskers en bewegingsoefeningen om de straten te heroveren in een vreselijke parade.

Het evenement begint met een gezamenlijke maaltijd. Daarna is er een gefaciliteerde discussie over onze relatie tot monsters en hun rol in verschillende culturele contexten. Samen zullen we nadenken over het transformatieve potentieel van het monsterlijke in relatie tot onze eigen angsten en verlangens, die vaak beïnvloed worden door grotere politieke infrastructuren. We zullen onze eigen monsters creëren in een visualisatieoefening.

Daarna geven we vorm aan onze monsters door maskers te maken. Hiervoor nodigen we je uit om materialen mee te nemen die je associeert met wedergeboorte en transformatie. Voel je vrij om resten van thuis mee te nemen, zoals restjes stof, schelpen en flessendoppen. Door middel van bewegingsoefeningen laten we onze monsters tot leven komen en onderzoeken we de manier waarop onze monsters bewegen en met elkaar omgaan. Het evenement zal uitmonden in een carnavaleske optocht door de buurt. We doen speelse experimenten in de openbare ruimte en nodigen voorbijgangers uit om mee te doen. We eindigen met een collectieve reflectie.

ABOUT JULIA WILHELM

Julia Wilhelm is a cultural worker, artist and organiser based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. She is passionate about building bottom-up infrastructures, developing formats for learning together, and experimenting with tools for the creation and dissemination of knowledge. She devises workshops as spaces for exchange and experimentation. Paper and sound waves feature as intimate carriers of dreams, knowledge, and questions. Wilhelm believes in working collectively to experiment with alternative forms of social organising towards communal agency and responsibility. Her collaborations include, amongst others, the Hamburger Community at Roodkapje (Rotterdam), the Promiscuous Care Study Group, and the experimental reading program Reading Rhythms Club.
