Bio- and Geo-based Materials: hear from some boundary-pushing architects about the state of bio and geobased building in the Netherlands

Inspired by the popular series from ACAN UK, in our very first webinar "Stories from the Construction Site - Biobased and Geobased Materials" we will hear about the speakers' work and then discuss some of the following topics: * How far we have come in NL with bio/geobased materials, and how the market is evolving* Real impacts of scaling biobased solutions: LCAs, land use, monocultures and supply chains* Practical strategies and remaining barriers to ease the adoption of bio/geobased materials in construction* An honest look at regulations, standards, and procurement frameworks related to these materials* The mindset shift needed around durability, risk and total cost of ownership to that can accommodate the use of biobased Speakers: Laura van Santen is an architect and co-founder of The Hague based la-di-da together with partner Diederik de Koning. In their practice they try to be ecological by building in the most economical way possible. This fascination with “eco-brutalism” leads to practical but unusual solutions for small-scale residential projects. They try to understand the construction process from raw material to product. In co-operation they conduct material experiments with various workshops, and they develop new architectural products that find their application in cultural buildings. Christina Eickmeier is an architect and co-founder of Dutch-German practice Chrith Architects based in Zaandam. Together with Thomas van Nus, the firm focuses on sustainable solutions, including natural materials, straw-bale construction, and clay building, to create environmentally conscious spaces. Their work seeks to find a synergy between spatial solutions and natural materials – with a focus on healthy living environments. Floor Hoogenboezem is architect and program manager of Biobase Boulevard at the Green Village TU Delft. Researchers, students, startups, entrepreneurs, and government agencies work daily at The Green Village on the innovation challenges of today and tomorrow. The focus is on three themes: Sustainable Construction and Renovation, Future Energy System, and Climate-Adaptive City.
