Exploring Carbon Capture & Storage in the Port of Rotterdam. Join us for a unique student visit to Portlantis and the Porthos CCS project!

This day offers Erasmus University students the opportunity to learn more about Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and see how it is being implemented in one of Europe’s most important energy and industrial hubs.Through expert talks, interactive discussions, and a guided site visit, students will gain insight into the technical, economic, and societal aspects of CCS and its role in the energy transition. During this time, students can explore the Portlantis exhibition independently. Please note: food is not allowed inside the exhibition space. 13:10 – Bus Departure Coach departure from Portlantis to the Bonatti site.13:30 – 14:45 | Site Visit Presentation about the compressor station followed by a bus tour of the cooling water pump building.14:45 – 15:00 | Bus Transfer15:00 – 15:30 | Visit to the Onshore Pipeline Site About PortlantisPortlantis is the home of the Port of Rotterdam — a place where visitors can explore and experience Europe’s most advanced port from a unique perspective.Located on newly created land that extends into the North Sea, Portlantis offers an interactive exhibition about the port of today and tomorrow, combining technology, innovation, and sustainability. From the building and its surrounding viewpoints, visitors can see ships, industrial plants, and container terminals in action while learning about the future of the port and the energy transition.The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the port’s industrial ecosystem, showing how logistics, industry, energy, and innovation come together in one of the world’s most dynamic port areas. About PorthosPorthos is one of the most important Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects currently being developed in the Netherlands.The project will transport CO₂ captured from industrial companies in the Port of Rotterdam and store it in depleted gas fields beneath the North Sea. In total, around 37 million tonnes of CO₂ will be stored over a period of 15 years, equivalent to about 2.5 million tonnes per year.Companies such as Shell, ExxonMobil, Air Liquide, and Air Products will capture CO₂ from their industrial processes and deliver it to the Porthos infrastructure for transport and storage offshore.CCS plays an important role in achieving Dutch and European climate targets, as it allows large amounts of CO₂ emissions from industry to be reduced while the transition to sustainable energy systems continues.Porthos is a joint initiative of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, EBN, and Gasunie, and the system is expected to become operational in 2026.
