Subtle Body: Philosophy Salon

When we think about human beings, we think about them as unities of mind and body. This dichotomy has been feeding and guiding our best philosophy and science for many centuries. The two key questions we ask under this framework are: how can the body generate the mind - what needs to happen for personhood and consciousness to emerge? And how does the mind affect the body - can there be inverse, equally powerful mental effects? But suppose we think of ourselves in a different way: as fundamentally energetic beings - not miraculous unities of mind and body, but as energetic networks. How can this conception alter how we think about the physical body and its effect on the mind? What does it say about the relationship between energy and thought? In this Philosophy Salon, we will explore the concept of a 'subtle body', that offers a way out of the mind-body dichotomy and paves a path both away from, and to, ourselves.
