TALKING HEADS

Two short plays

'A Chip in the Sugar' and 'Bed Among the Lentils'
by Alan Bennett

These two comedy / dramas from Britain's best-loved writer, Alan Bennett, tour The Netherlands in June 2018. Bennett's career spans TV, Film and Theatre. His play, The History Boys took home no fewer than 6 Tony Awards. His recent film The Lady in the Van starred Oscar-winning, Downton Abbey actress, Maggie Smith.

Bed Among the Lentils

Starring Loveday Smith

Vicar's wife Susan is an atheist; and an alcoholic. Not exactly cut out for a quiet Yorkshire parish, she turns to an Indian shopkeeper for solace. To her surprise, solace is not the only thing on the menu, among the sacks or lentils.

Loveday Smith started working at London's West End, in theatre and musicals, working for directors like Sam Mendes and the late Sir Peter Hall. She has made many TV and film appearances including Coronation Street, Heartbeat and recent Hunter Street for Nickelodeon. QETC devotees will also remember her loveable, good-time girl, Dolly, in One Man, Two Guvnors.

A Chip in the Sugar

Starring Mark Winstanley

Graham is a mild, middle-aged man who lives with his ageing, widowed mother. His humdrum existence is jeopardised however when old flame, Mr. Turnbull, appears on the scene. The future looks bleak for Graham, but an unexpected visitor gives him the opportunity to restore the status quo.

QETC's Artistic Director returns to the stage, having directed many of Bennett's plays. A child-actor, Mark has played roles from Shakespeare to Sondheim. Musical highlights include playing Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors, directed by Barrie Stevens. As well as film appearances, voiceovers and directing, Mark is a character actor, regularly performing for Mme. Tussauds in English, French and Dutch.

Talking Heads first aired on BBC television in two series, being nominated for no fewer than thirteen BAFTA awards. Amongst the nominees were Maggie Smith, Julie Walters, Patricia Routledge and Thora Hird, who won Best Actress BAFTAs for both her appearances. Seen as classics of their genre they are in studied in school and have had successful West End and New York theatre runs.
