In this workshop we will explore the concept of ritual and performance art, inviting the participants of Teken Or Leave It to reflect on personal and collective experiences of farewell or absence, blending writing, drawing, and discussion about mourning rituals, the differences and similarities of rites from different cultures, to understand new symbolic acts through performance. Culminating with the participation of a collective performance where the artist will lead an experience acknowledging humanity's intrinsic need for meaning in the face of loss. While traditional rites help humans cope with life transitions, performance art can invent new rituals addressing contemporary social needs workshop at Nieuwe Vide, blending writing, drawing, and discussion about mourning rituals, followed by  participants tying white ribbons with names to the flower wreath culminating with the burning of the flower wreath.

More about the artist

Javi Henríquez (1997) (she/they).  Is an actress and performance artist. They started her career in theater but shifted towards performance art in 2019, creating activist works individually and collaboratively. Her work explores lesbian identity and territorial memory through action art, like in the series “Reflections on a Body on the Tightrope” (2022), addressing five cases of lesbicide in Chile. Currently they are preparing for their first international group exhibition at Projektraum Bardo, Berlin (June 2025) with Torta, a piece exploring language and queer identity.

Javi Henríquez : “The idea of this project started from my own personal experience, when my two grandmother and a cousin passed away, in a period of time that the distance and social situations prevented me from attending the wakes, is here where I reflect about the necessity of rituals to mourning and closure, and I wonder how the lack of this can affect not only personal but collectively a community that is affected from a great loss and death.”

In deze workshop verkennen we het concept van rituelen en performancekunst. Deelnemers van Teken Or Leave It worden uitgenodigd om te reflecteren op persoonlijke en collectieve ervaringen van afscheid of afwezigheid. Door middel van schrijven, tekenen en gesprekken over rouwrituelen – en de overeenkomsten en verschillen tussen rituelen uit verschillende culturen – zoeken we naar nieuwe symbolische handelingen via performance.

De workshop mondt uit in een gezamenlijke performance, waarbij de kunstenaar een ervaring begeleidt die stilstaat bij de intrinsieke menselijke behoefte aan betekenis bij verlies. Waar traditionele rituelen mensen helpen om te gaan met levensovergangen, biedt performancekunst ruimte om nieuwe rituelen te ontwikkelen die inspelen op hedendaagse maatschappelijke behoeften.

De workshop vindt plaats bij Nieuwe Vide en combineert schrijven, tekenen en gesprekken over rouwrituelen. De deelnemers binden witte linten met namen aan een bloemenkrans, waarna de bijeenkomst wordt afgesloten met het verbranden van de krans.

Meer over de kunstenaar
Javi Henríquez (1997) (zij/hen) is actrice en performancekunstenaar. Hen begon diens carrière in het theater, maar verschoof in 2019 de focus naar performancekunst, waarbij ze - zowel individueel als in samenwerking - activistisch werk creëert. Henríquez’ werk onderzoekt lesbische identiteit en territoriale herinneringen via actie-gerichte kunst, zoals in de reeks Reflections on a Body on the Tightrope (2022), waarin vijf gevallen van lesbicide in Chili worden onderzocht. Op dit moment bereidt Javi Henríquez zich voor op haar eerste internationale groepstentoonstelling bij Projektraum Bardo in Berlijn (juni 2025) met Torta, een werk dat taal en queer identiteit onderzoekt.

Javi Henríquez: “Het idee voor dit project ontstond vanuit mijn eigen ervaring: toen mijn twee grootmoeders en een nicht overleden in een periode waarin afstand en sociale omstandigheden het onmogelijk maakten om bij de ceremonies aanwezig te zijn. Op dat moment begon ik na te denken over de noodzaak van rituelen voor rouw en afsluiting. Ik vroeg me af hoe het ontbreken daarvan niet alleen persoonlijk, maar ook collectief een hele gemeenschap kan raken die geconfronteerd wordt met een groot verlies en de dood.”
