The Algo: is narrative power democratised?

Salam Aleykum Habibi!

Social media has for ever changed the way we communicatie and how much control we have over our own narratives. Before, broadcasters and productions companies had the final say on which subjects made it on the television or to the movie theater. Today, it is big tech and the alghorithm they design. They question we want to discuss with you is what endless possibilities the community has in telling its own story, what are the limitations of any who want to grow their influence through social media?

In the first part of the event we have invited the Kids Of the Colony to inspire us with their story to independence as a collective of documentary makers. How did they manage to go from rejection by big producers to becoming the most sought after collective in British television?

In the second part of the event we will provide you with a workshop on the workings of the alghorithm. How does social media work? How can you best analyse a social media account and make it grow successfull? What kind of content works best on social media and what are the power that dictate who is succesfull and who is not?
