Why do artists write novels? What does the artist’s novel do to the visual arts? How should such a novel be experienced?

Thank you for your understanding! --- Previous description:This event is the first of a trilogy, curated by David Maroto, around the artist&#x27;s novel. Curator Raimundas Malašauskas will discuss with David the recent publication of David&#x27;s PhD research as a two-volume book on the phenomenon of the artist&#x27;s novel, the first one ever written on the subject.David Maroto is a Spanish visual artist based in The Netherlands. In 2019 he was awarded his PhD at Edinburgh College of Art (supervisors Maria Fusco and Jane McKie), in partnership with the Dutch Art Institute (DAI), where he previously obtained his MFA degree. As a visual artist, he has developed a long-term project called The Book Lovers, in collaboration with Joanna Zielinska (head curator of the performance department in CCA Ujazdowski Castle Warsaw). David has edited various publications, including &#x27;Artist Novels&#x27; (Sternberg Press, 2015); &#x27;Tamam Shud&#x27; (Sternberg Press, 2018); and Obieg Magazine no. 8, &#x27;Art &amp; Literature: A Mongrel&#x27;s Guide&#x27; (2018); and is currently preparing the publication of his PhD thesis, which includes the novel &#x27;The Fantasy of the Novel&#x27; (2019).Raimundas Malašauskas is a Lithuanian curator and writer living in Brussels. His curatorial and writing practices are notable for their questioning approach to the concept of the exhibition, creating unpredictable, often playful results. Raimundas was curator of the CAC Vilnius from 1995 – 2006, and Artists Space, New York from 2007 – 09. He recently curated Meeting Points 8, Cairo/Brussels/Beirut, 2017, part of the Liverpool Biennial 2016; The Lithuania and Cyprus Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2013; and Repetition Island at the Centre Pompidou, and Satellite 4 at the Jeu de Paume, both Paris, 2010. Paper Exhibition – Selected Writings was published by Sternberg Press in 2012, and his notebook on Burlesque was published as part of dOCUMENTA 13. In 2019 he is a visiting Professor to HEAD, Geneva.
