The People's Assembly

As the International Court of Justice (ICJ) convenes to deliberate on a landmark advisory opinion on obligations of state in respect of climate change, the Pacific Island Students Fighting Climate Change (PISFCC), World’s Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ), and the Future Generations Tribunal (FGT) are spearheading a platform for individuals from different walks of life impacted by the climate crisis to share their experiences, concerns, and ideas, and to have these conversations be amplified before the ICJ – titled The People's Assembly. Scheduled to run concurrently with the ICJ's oral pleadings, this event stands as a critical public counterpoint to the legal discussions inside the courthouse and a powerful tool for influencing the ICJ's advisory opinion.

This event is intended to complement the ongoing International Court of Justice (ICJ) climate advisory proceeding, aiming to amplify frontline voices and influence the Court's advisory opinion by synthesising these insights into a comprehensive document which will then be presented on behalf of civil society inside the Court.By creating a space for the voices of those most impacted by the climate crisis to be heard, the People’s Assembly ensures that the legal outcomes align with the will and demands of the people. Public support and participation are essential not only for raising awareness of key issues, but also for generating political pressure, which can create an environment conducive to a strong and favourable advisory opinion. In a time when the stakes of climate change are life-altering, the People’s Assembly will remind decision-makers that the power of public engagement and solidarity must guide the path for the future.With the People’s Assembly, we hope to send a powerful reminder to member states, decision-makers, and the public of the necessity to align legal outcomes with the will and demands of the people.
