Event description

Description

The State of Conflict: A conference to explore political practice and social relations through the lens of conflict.

The Public Mediation Programme (PMP) of the University of Amsterdam is pleased to invite you to take part in the second State of Conflict Conference. The Conference will take place on the 6th of December 2018 in Amsterdam. We hope, as last year, to bring together a diverse group of practitioners, professionals, and academics to reflect for a day on Dutch society and institutions through the lens of conflict. The day will be chaired by prof. dr. Alexander Rinnooy Kan, the chair of PMP’s advisory board. The location for the Conference limits the number of spaces that are available. Please RSVP if you would like to reserve a place.

Have your conflicts or they will have you

On December 6th we will reflect together on the conflicts that engage us and try to pull out what these conflicts reveal about the challenges that our public, private, and civic institutions face. Conflict can provide a useful revealing perspective from which to view these challenges, particularly in a diverse society that is committed to democratic principles. The challenge of dealing with the differences in the grounded context of conflict can shed light on the potential for impasse and polarization, the risks this poses for sustaining social and political relationships, and the practical options for moving forward. It can also help us see how efforts to limit conflict—and thereby groups’ ability to articulate grievances—can also undermine the health and resilience of democratic institutions and practices. It is in light of these overlapping challenges that we hope to develop insights into a very practical democratic question—how, not whether, to have conflicts.

Thematic break-out sessions

The day will provide ample opportunities to examine and learn together about current challenges in thematic break-out sessions organised with partner institutions. The topics for this year's conference will be announced in September, but will build on the discussions that took place at the 2017 Conference, including the changing shape of civic space, the relationship between community and conflict, and the controversies that arise when we start to act on plans for major transitions. The programme for the day is still taking shape and we will update you as further details are finalised.

We look forward to seeing you on December 6th!
