This is part of the Monthly Writer’s Room series at CultureHub, Rotterdam.

This month, we turn to the art of the rant — raw, unfiltered, and gloriously free. A rant is more than anger on the page. It is rhythm, voice, and urgency colliding into language that refuses to sit still.

What happens when we let a character (or ourselves) go off the rails? When words tumble out faster than thought, when every sentence burns with conviction, when restraint gives way to release? To rant is to speak without apology, to find beauty in excess, to cut through silence with heat.

From comic monologues to feverish novels, from diary confessions to political speeches, the rant has always been a form of truth-telling. It is unhinged, but it is also literary craft: repetition, escalation, perspective. And in shifting between first, second, and third person, we can shape not just the rant itself but the power it has over the reader.

What to expect:

• First, we read. Bring whatever book you are into and settle into one hour of quiet, collective presence.
• Then, we write. Through guided prompts, you’ll try on different points of view (the I, the you, the she) to unlock playful voices, exaggerated confessions, and the strange freedom of letting the rant take over. The workshop is held in English, but you are welcome to write in whatever language feels like home. There is no pressure to share your work. This is a space for exploration, reflection, and creation.

Come ready to let loose. Leave with new ways of thinking about character, voice, and freedom on the page. Whether you write fiction, memoir, poetry, or journal for yourself, all forms and levels are welcome.
