THE WRITER'S ROOM

CultureHubRotterdam, ZH
Thursday, Mar 26 from 7 pm to 9 pm
Overview

An interactive writing workshop on desire, fear, and honest complexity.

Write the Push and Pull: Crafting Tension and Duality in Your Characters

I want to feel close to someone.I do not want to be seen.

In this craft-focused writing workshop, we will explore one of the most powerful forces in storytelling: inner conflict. The kind that makes characters feel human. The kind that gives scenes voltage. The kind that lives not only in thought, but in breath, skin, memory, and muscle.

Whether you are writing a novel, memoir, short fiction, or simply filling the pages of your journal, this session will help you:

  • Create layered, believable characters
  • Turn contradiction into narrative tension
  • Write from the senses so conflict feels embodied
  • Transform emotional push and pull into scene energy
  • Move beyond flat motivations into honest complexity

You will learn how duality works on the page, why it deepens character and strengthens plot, and how internal tension becomes external action. Then you will practice it immediately through guided, accessible exercises.

This is not a lecture-heavy evening. It is interactive, energizing, and grounded in craft you can apply right away.

The evening structure:

18:00-ish: Doors open for (optional) dinner walk-ins

18:30: Dinner is servedDinner is available by pre-booking only. As part of our shared community experience, all plates are served together. Please arrive on time, as late arrivals may result in cold dishes. We cannot accommodate allergies or dietary restrictions. The daily menu is created based on fresh produce and is served as designed.

19:10 to 19:30-ish: Craft ChatAn informal Q and A on all things writing. Bring your questions about character, structure, voice, publishing, or process.

19:30 to 21:00: Interactive Mini-WorkshopWe move into the guided session on tension and duality. Dropping in after the workshop begins is not recommended.

21:00-ish: Closing Notes

You do not need a finished project. You do not need to share aloud unless you want to. You only need curiosity about the contradictions that shape us.

Great stories are not built on certainty. They are built on characters who want connection and fear exposure, who long for freedom and crave belonging, who move forward while pulling back.

Come write the tension.Seats are limited.

IMPORTANT - Please note: In March 2026 there will be no dedicated reading hour. Instead, on March 19 2026 an Evening for Readers will be organized at CultureHub Rotterdam from 19:00 to 22:00. You are welcome to bring your own reading. This event requires a minimum of one drink consumption and a donation.
