New, intimate, ludacris or empowering forms for interaction

Did you know the word ‘spontaneous’ only got a positive connotation at the end of the 19th century? Based upon the work of Norbert Elias in which the evolution of social conventions and etiquettes is described. Dutch sociologist Cas Wouters more recently wrote about the process of ‘informalisation’ where he writes about how social roles and codes continue to become less lived by, to cope with this we need to appeal to our sense of empathy in order to address the world around us.

This informalisation opens up possibilities for spontaneous encounters and to get out of our bubble, but yet we struggle. What do we need to let go in order to be able to receive? And how can design play a role in this? In this participatory and playful workshop you will, together with designers Manon van Hoeckel and Tom Loois, come up with new, intimate, ludacris or empowering forms for interaction. Thereby building on a skillset on how to familiarise ourselves with the strangers around us.

Tom Loois is a designer, curator, radio maker and teacher, graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2011. The common denominator in his practice is a boisterous fascination for how we as humans interact with one another. By questioning social structures and conventions, he is in search of connectivity and understanding.

As an artist Manon van Hoeckel is working on socially committed projects that take place in public spaces. With my projects I aim to spark reimagining of our daily environments. I often do co-creations with communities. I hope to contribute to projects that improve the well-being of communities and to be able to design tools for conversation.

About

Age of Wonderland 2017 presents 100 DAYS OF LEARNING, a global learning event to exchange valuable life experiences with peers. Doers and thinkers from around the world - innovators, scientists, engineers, artists, designers, social entrepreneurs - are invited to share their personal stories, ideas, and practice, not to be found in textbooks. Aim is to rediscover knowledge, challenge beliefs, and exchange life lessons with others. To make the world a better place, we need to embrace change on an individual level, and inspire others to do the same.

During World Design Event the gathered knowledge and experiences will be shared in daily talkshows at Peoples Pavilion and in Baltan Laboratories Expo (Natlab).
