Climate College Tour: Diederik Samsom

Thursday October 11th - 18:00 until 19:00 - The Student Hotel Amsterdam City

Diederik Samsom was leader of the Labour Party (PvdA) till december 2016. After retiring from politics, Diederik, also known as the Red Engineer, returned to his roots. Passionate about sustainability and the energy transition, he will lead the negotiations for the climate agreement the coming years. His mission? Get two million Dutch houses to be off natural gas by 2030.

Diederik has been involved in environmentalism long before entering politics. After graduating with an engineering degree in technical physics from the TU Delft, he joined Greenpeace as an activist and campaign leader from 1995 till 2001. Successively, he was the CEO of Real Energy, a small green energy trading company for a year. In 2003 Diederik joined the House of Representatives for the Labour Party, where he was the party’s spokesperson on environmental issues till 2011. He worked on sustainability, climate and energy, infrastructure and international development. In 2012, Diederik became leader of the Labour Party, chairman of the party in the House of Representatives and spokesperson on asylum and refugees. EenVandaag awarded him with the title Politician of the Year in the same year. In 2016, Samsom lost the race for party leadership and he consequently retired from politics. He now works as sustainability advisor for waste- and energy company HVC and as commissioner of the state-owned energy company EBN. On top of that, Diederik has been asked by the Minister of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy Wiebes to use his energetic and practical nature to lead the negotiations on the Dutch climate agreement.

Moderator Peter Melis will interview Diederik Samsom about his role in the Dutch climate negotiations, how politics, activism and business can work together to speed up the energy transition, concrete solutions for climate change brought by social enterprises, and whether his opinions on climate change have changed since his early years at Greenpeace.

Climate College Tour is a series of inspirational interview sessions with front runners and innovators on climate, entrepreneurship and sustainability, presented by Sungevity, Social Enterprise NL and The Student Hotel. We believe in the power of shared inspiration, therefore sessions are open to everyone.

We hope to see you on the 11th of October!
