Beschrijving
May 30, 2019 will mark the 50th anniversary of the social uprising in Willemstad, Curaçao that inaugurated a new wave of Black resistance. Even though the uprising was sparked by a labour dispute its ramifications went well beyond labour relations.
This special session of the project Geographies of Freedom will highlight the historical importance of the revolt as a pivotal event in the continuing struggle against (oil) imperialist oppression and exploitation in the Dutch Caribbean. We will open the session with brief presentations followed by a screening of archival footage and concluding with a panel conversation.
