Have you ever worked on a project with files named final.docx, final_v2.docx, final_really_final.docx, or struggled to understand which version of your code, data analysis, or manuscript produced a specific result? This 4-hour introductory workshop introduces the core ideas behind version control using Git. Participants will learn how Git can be used to track changes, compare versions, recover earlier work, document project history, and collaborate more safely with others. The session combines conceptual explanations, short demonstrations, interactive exercises, and light live coding. Participants are encouraged to install Git in advance so they can follow along with the practical examples. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a clearer understanding of what Git is, why it is useful, and how they can continue learning and applying it in their own research or professional projects.
Target audience
This workshop is designed for beginners who have little or no previous experience with Git. It is suitable for researchers, PhD candidates, data stewards, research software engineers in training, and research support staff who want to understand how version control can improve their project workflows. No prior Git experience is required. Basic familiarity with files, folders, and working with a computer terminal is helpful but not essential.
Recommended preparation
- Install Git.
