Olfactory artist Klara Ravat will host a workshop on scent within the context of the Hack the Body program. Participants will get an introduction about smell and will learn how to obtain an extract from their own body odor.
We will use small cuts of worn t-shirts from each participant as source material for distilling scents through steam distillation. During the process participants will learn about the existing types of distillation and how to build a DIY-distiller at home. Afterwards, participants will be able to take home a sample of the distilled compound.
IMPORTANT - INSTRUCTION FOR PREPARATION:
During the workshop we are going to be extracting your own body scent from a t-shirt for a collective distillation. Therefore, it is important to prepare a t-shirt (white if possible) with your own smell. Wear the shirt for at least 3 days before the workshop. During this process, you may not want to use deodorant or perfume, otherwise the fabric of the shirt will just smell like synthetic smells instead of your own body odor.
Alternatively, you can sleep with the t-shirt for 3 nights. Please remove any remaining deodorant before going to bed while wearing the shirt. During the day, seal the t-shirt in a plastic bag – so the scent can stick to it. Bring the t-shirt in a plastic bag to the workshop. We will be cutting a piece of it to be able to add it into the distiller.
