Getting involved in the practice of eating earth or soil-like materials

Geophagy is the practice of eating earth or soil-like materials. The importance of touching or eating earth is present in many cultures. Last months Masha Ru Studio has been building up an extensive database of soils for oral use available on the market. More than 400 different types of soils from more than 20 different countries have been purchased through internet and in cultural shops to form the basis for The Museum of Edible Earth.

For her Day of Learning she would like to invite the audience to experience some of the soils and talk about their content, as well as discuss possible stimuli for geophagy.

The starting phase of Museum of Edible Earth was supported by Creative Industries Fund NL.

Masha Ru (1984, Moscow) is a creative with the background in science, living and working in Amsterdam. Masha’s projects combine mathematics and scientific research with a personal approach and indigenous knowledge. In 2011 Ru obtained a doctor degree in Mathematics and graduated with honours from a part-time programme at Photo Academy Amsterdam. In 2013-2014 she followed a two-years research art-in-residency programme at Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunst. Her work was presented at 4th Jakarta Contemporary Ceramics Biennale in Jakarta, ReadyTex Gallery in Paramaribo, European Ceramic Workcentre in Oisterwijk, Sustainica in Dusseldorf, Holland Festival, Mediamatic and Transnatural in Amsterdam, 6th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Arts and Museo Maritimo in Bilbao. About

Age of Wonderland 2017 presents 100 DAYS OF LEARNING, a global learning event to exchange valuable life experiences with peers. Doers and thinkers from around the world - innovators, scientists, engineers, artists, designers, social entrepreneurs - are invited to share their personal stories, ideas, and practice, not to be found in textbooks. Aim is to rediscover knowledge, challenge beliefs, and exchange life lessons with others. To make the world a better place, we need to embrace change on an individual level, and inspire others to do the same.

During World Design Event the gathered knowledge and experiences will be shared in daily talkshows at Peoples Pavilion and in Baltan Laboratories Expo (Natlab).
