Annika Kappner X Neuhaus
The soundwalk invites you to explore the (bio) diversity and complexity of The New Garden through the sensorial; to engage with The New Garden through the body as a space to connect to the feminine qualities of receptivity and coexistence to access other, more-than-human, possibilities of knowing and being. With an introduction and Q&A with Annika.

A guided live meditation created by artist Annika Kappner invites the visitor to explore the (bio) diversity and complexity of The New Garden; to connect himself to his surroundings and experience the hybrid, seemingly conflicting elements of the environment through the senses. Combining elements of the urban and social soundscape with information on healing properties and the diverse history of the plants inhabiting The New Garden, a new experiential dimension is created. Juxtaposing and blending sensory layers that are associated with specific concepts (eg. scientific, esoteric, class, ethnicity, exotic, indigenous, plant, animal, human, natural, artificial) the work seeks to unveil unconscious emotions and mental representations related to predominant dualistic ways of thinking and experiencing (social) space.
Annika Kappner creates multi-sensory compositions in the extended field of painting, combining installation, sculpture, sound and performance to create glitches in perception. Prompted by her experience as investment banker, her work is interested in the evolution of consciousness, the shifting perception of (self) image in relation to mental patterns and the underlying forces that shape their systemic counterparts in nature, visual arts, technology and science. She seeks to add experiential perspectives to the contemporary relationship between human, nature and technology, addressing concepts of non-duality and otherness. She is a co-founder of the multi-disciplinary artist collective Elephants & Volcanoes.

Kunstenaar Annika Kappner neemt bezoekers live mee in een geleide meditatie op een verkenning van de biologische diversiteit en rijkdom van De Nieuwe Tuin. Ze nodigt hen uit om met al hun zintuigen te ervaren uit welke hybride en soms zelfs paradoxale elementen het milieu is opgebouwd en om een verbinding aan te gaan met hun eigen directe omgeving. Vooraf geeft Annika Kappner een introductie en achteraf vindt er een Q&A plaats.
Die ervaring krijgt een extra dimensie doordat Kappner informatie over de historische betekenis en heilzame werking van planten die in De Nieuwe Tuin groeien verbindt aan flarden van de bestaande grootstedelijke en maatschappelijke soundscape van de Rotterdamse binnenstad. Zintuigelijke indrukken die meestal met heel specifieke noties worden geassocieerd, worden hier tegen elkaar afgezet en door elkaar gebruikt: de resulterende beleving verenigt het wetenschappelijke en het esoterische, klasse en etniciteit, het exotische en inheemse, het menselijke, natuurlijke en kunstmatige. De geluidswandeling brengt de onbewuste emoties en denkbeelden aan het licht die bepalen hoe (sociale) ruimte beschouwd en beleefd wordt. Van daaruit biedt de wandeling een mogelijk alternatief voor de gangbare dualistische benadering van mens en ‘natuur.’

Annika Kappner
Annika Kappner, medeoprichter van het interdisciplinaire kunstenaarscollectief Elephants & Volcanoes, streeft in haar praktijk naar glitches in de waarneming. Haar composities in het verlengde van de schilderkunst zijn een combinatie van elementen uit installatie-, beeldhouw-, geluids- en performancekunst en doen een beroep op meerdere zintuigen tegelijk. Ingegeven door haar ervaring als investeringsbankier, houdt Kappner zich in haar werk bezig met de ontwikkeling van bewustzijn, of de manier waarop de perceptie van ons (zelf)beeld verandert in relatie tot mentale patronen en de onderliggende krachten die vorm geven aan hun systemische tegenhangers in de natuur, beeldende kunst, technologie en wetenschap. Ze streeft ernaar om de hedendaagse verhouding tussen mens, natuur en technologie te voorzien van invalshoeken op basis van ervaringen, waarbij ze ingaat op concepten als non-dualiteit en otherness.
