In this Carbon Stories edition, we discuss how railway stations and their surrounding districts contribute to Paris Proof urban development

How can railway stations contribute to a low-carbon future? This edition of Carbon Stories focuses on the transition from the Paris Proof station to the Paris Proof station district.
Recent research by Bureau Spoorbouwmeester and GROUP A demonstrates that railway stations can be designed within Paris Proof carbon limits, provided that CO₂ reduction is integrated into the design process from the very first stage. At the same time, the research suggests that the greatest climate gains may not lie within the station itself, but in the development of the surrounding station district as a catalyst for sustainable mobility, urban densification, and the 15-minute city.
This broader perspective is further explored within the TU Delft CARB HUB research project (Climate-Adaptive Resilient and Balanced Mobility Hubs), led by Manuela Triggianese and Halina Veloso e Zarate.
Together with researchers and experts, we will explore how station districts can evolve into catalysts for low-carbon urban development and what this means for the future spatial development of the Netherlands.
Carbon Stories is an initiative of GROUP A | CARBONLAB, the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR), and KeileCollectief, with support from Klimaat Academie Rotterdam.
