How to time travel with everyday tools

Using Afrofuturism and science fiction as a lens and Octavia Butler's novel ‘Kindred’ as inspiration, this workshop by Rasheedah Phillips (USA) explores and experiments with how one can time travel with everyday tools such as memory, imagination, manipulation of language and perceptions.

Interdisciplinary social practice artist (and lawyer) Rasheedah Phillips considers how afrofuturism can be used by disenfranchised communities to create safer spaces for visioning and testing of ideas around community sustainability, resilience, and resistance, and as a technology for practical implementation of those ideas.

Rasheedah Phillips is an artist and a lawyer. In 2011 she created The AfroFuturist Affair, a grassroots community formed to celebrate, strengthen, and promote Afrofuturistic and Sci-Fi concepts and culture through creative events and creative writing. She currently serves as Managing Attorney of the LT Housing Unit at Community Legal Services of Philadelphia, and has worked at Community Law Services since 2008. In 2013 she was awarded a Next Generation of Women Leaders: Rising Stars by the Philadelphia city council.

Rasheedah Phillips will also be doing a performance that same day, location and time t.b.a.
