With the symposium we explore the importance of the physical connection with the world around you, for life in the here and now. We invite a curator, an artist/researcher and a linguist to talk about the importance of the physical encounter in the current time in relation to playful arts. They outline the development of time and how art reflects on it. Look back, at where we came from, and stand still at the here and now.

Met het symposium diepen we het belang van de fysieke verbinding met de wereld om je heen uit, voor het leven in het hier en nu. We nodigen een curator, kunstenaars en een taalwetenschapper uit om te vertellen over het belang van de fysieke ontmoeting in de huidige tijd in relatie tot playful arts. Zij schetsen de ontwikkelen van de tijd en hoe kunst hierop reflecteert. Blikken terug, op waar komen we vandaan en staan stil bij het hier en nu.

About the speakers

Rieke Vos
Rieke Vos (b. 1981, The Netherlands) is a curator living in Amsterdam. Her interest unfolds around the borders of art, architecture and urban life, where she feels constantly driven by a search for poetry in the everyday.

In 2014 she initiated a program around sports and art that highlights the potential of play and improvisation in an efficiency-driven society. She also works on a program around the 65-year legacy of the Sonsbeek open air exhibitions in Arnhem program. In 2013 she was research-curator for the Istanbul Biennale and co-curator the exhibition Artificial Amsterdam that took place at de Appel arts centre (i.c.w. Gerardo Mosquera). She was participant of de Appel Curatorial Programme in the years 2010 and 2011. From 2011 – 2012 she worked as a curator for SKOR | Foundation for Art and Public Space and from 2008 – 2010 she developed several research and curatorial projects for the architecture firm Powerhouse Company in Amsterdam. Rieke studied Art History and Architecture Theory at the University of Amsterdam and the Freie Universität in Berlin.

Aurélie d’Incau
Aurélie d'Incau is an artist, researcher and initiator of Kolla Festival. Her work is a research on the life in a community (empathy), on what we share (identity) and how we maintain this community (ethics, rules). Consequently, throughout her work, she intends to integrate the very essence of art as a tool for awareness creation in the everyday life.

Aurélie often draws on what she sees as the highest form of learning: play. Play is free, disinterested and in an alternate time zone and thus can be perfectly used as a tool to question freedom of the human, quality in art, function of objects, materiality of the mind, fiction, truth, memory and our world view. It is either through play or the absence of play, choice, or the absence of choice, freedom or the absence of freedom that she's researching on the role of the participator and the role of the non-participator in her art.

Starting from the assumption that play is a tool for social change. Aurélie d'Incau is going to present a brief history of 'playful art' which had its focus on social change. Starting from the 1920's Dada movement to Fluxus and Situationist International, she is going to offer a small analysis on how the role of Play in art has developed over the years in relation to the respective political climate.
