In this webinar an overview of the field of legal engineering will be given, why it is inevitable that the rules of law meet ICT infrastructures and computer code itself, what, where and when practical benefits are expected for governments, businesses and citizens.

Technologies which will be discussed are legal engineering and Self-Sovereign Identity.

10:00- 11:00 The what, why and when of legal engineering

- Lydia Meijer (Leibniz Institute & TNO) elucidates about legal engineering and major application areas. The first area relates to the interpretation and automation of contracts, laws and other norms. The second area comprises the (automated) interventions in national digital infrastructures to deliver maximal cybersecurity.

- Rieks Joosten (TNO) explains the major technical challenges of legal engineering: where can/should data come from? How and when can users trust this data? What about privacy and the GDPR? How to (not) make data available for others? These challenges are addressed by emphasizing the sovereignty that people and organizations have (see e.g. art. 9-11 of European Convention of Human Rights).
