The Body, the Mind and the City is a series of 5 symposiums that explore the relationship between the human body and physical space. Every Wednesday, we’ll invite architects, planners, scientists, tech developers, artists and designers to present their work and try to understand how our bodies and mind interact with urban environments; how space design and technology can affect our physiological condition, change our sensory perception and behaviors.

SYMPOSIUM #1 SKIN
We live in a society where visual forms, visual contents are predominant and architecture is no exception. But what happens when we turn away from visual stimulations for a bit, and start to explore other senses? What happens when we try to understand the world that surrounds us by touching it or just letting ourselves be touched, stroked, squeezed.

The skin is our largest organ. It forms our identity, acts as protective and sensory envelop. It receives constant stimulations that penetrate different layers that are interpreted so we can understand and adapt to our environments. Touch also plays a key role in children’s cognitive and emotional development and throughout our lives. So how could we develop haptic and interactive space design in order to create more direct sensory experiences of space for users?

SPEAKERS
TEUN VONK - NL
Teun Vonk is a visual artist who, after a long time of researching the human body in his photography and film practice, has chosen a radically different direction in his approach to this subject: instead of working primarily from behind a desk, he has made his own body and that of the viewer far more central.
Vonk makes his personal bodily experiences physically accessible to the public. Individually, for the visitor who undergoes a total experience, and for the visitors who see the physical interaction between that individual and the installation as a visual object. Reasoning from his own body and with his experiences as a starting point, he experiments in a process where he continually asks for feedback and repeatedly refines the work.

MYRTO KARANIKA – GR
Myrto Karanika is an architect and an artist. Her practice touches upon a variety of fields such as spatial design, responsive art, textile art, sound art and biology. Combining soft technologies with traditional art practices like illustration, printmaking, stitching and embroidery, she creates textile-based responsive installation pieces that seek to unravel aspects of perceptual activity and bodily engagement mainly within the context of spatial experience. Her work has been presented and exhibited in a variety of different public contexts across the UK as well as in Belgium, Brazil, Greece, Italy, Romania and Sweden.
