Step into the timeless art of traditional Arabic calligraphy and experience the unique rhythm of writing with a bamboo qalam.
- This workshop is designed as an introduction to the foundations of Arabic calligraphy, combining practical guidance with cultural and historical context. Participants will begin by learning the correct writing posture and how to hold and control the bamboo qalam, an essential part of developing precision, balance, and flow. From there, we will focus on creating core practice strokes that form the basis of calligraphic letterforms.
- Once the basics are established, participants will be introduced to writing the Arabic alphabet in Thuluth script, one of the most celebrated and graceful styles in the Arabic calligraphic tradition. Using bamboo qalam and ink on practice paper, you will learn how letters are constructed with attention to proportion and harmony. The workshop will also introduce the use of nuqtas, the classical dot-based measurement system used to maintain correct proportions in traditional calligraphy.
- In addition to the practical writing session, the workshop includes an informative presentation on traditional Arabic calligraphy. This presentation will cover what Arabic calligraphy is, offer a brief look into its rich history, and introduce some of the major scripts that have developed over time. This gives participants a deeper appreciation of the art form beyond the technical practice itself.
- To support your learning, each participant will receive their own folder containing calligraphy paper, worksheets, a bamboo qalam, and an inkwell. These materials are intended to help you practice during the workshop and continue your journey afterward.
This workshop is ideal for beginners, art lovers, and anyone curious about the beauty, discipline, and heritage of Arabic calligraphy.
