Tuesday 22-10: UNFOLDING SYMBOLS
Unravelling the Art of African Fashion
Els van der Plas, General Manager Muziektheater, previously director of Premsela and writer of The Art of African Fashion
Symbolic meanings have always been important to Vlisco’s fabrics and to those who wear them. One of Vlisco’s popular designs is L’oeil de boeuf, meaning The Bull’s Eye or Lustful Eye; a fabric that is worn by women to show a man she desires him. Another is the broody hen, surrounded by chicks, eggs and the head of a rooster, a pattern dating back to 1905, which in Ghana is known as Happy Family. However there is a second reading to this design: the rooster has only a head and no body, and the underlying, secret message is that the rooster (the husband) is sexually incapable and the hen (the wearer) is ‘available’ for another rooster.
How important is this symbolic language in contemporary African Fashion? And how can we come up with new designs? Els van der Plas will share her extraordinary cultural experience and unravel the language of the African customers.
