TextileLab turns Waag into a playground for wool research during the Wool Mondays on 2, 16 and 23 May!

Over dit evenement

Wool Monday 1: Wool Ecosystems (Place) (2nd of May - 15.00-19.00)

The first Wool Monday consists of two parts and you can choose if you join both, or only one part. From 15.00 to 17.00 , we will present and explore local wool ecosystems in the various places in which shemakes labs operate. It’s an opportunity to discover research into wool done and presented by the nine labs and to understand possibilities and challenges in the different European countries, and how these are reflected in their research and activities.

During the second part of this event from 17.00 - 19.00, we will focus on wool in the Netherlands by getting to know each other and our (desired) connection to wool. Shepard Sanne Muiser will take us on her journey from being a designer to also being a shepherd, and what she learned from being with her herd. Mariana Anacleto will share her interest in wool and the connection to women throughout history.

Wool Monday 2: Coloring wool (Design) (16th May - 15.00-19.00)

On the second Wool Monday, we will put various sustainable natural ways of dyeing and printing on wool into practice. We aim to understand and discover sustainable color streams for our local wool ecosystem. The workshop starts off with an introduction to sustainable coloring at a lab scale and gained insights of the research presented by three shemakes labs.

For the second part, the labs will conduct parallel activities. In Amsterdam, we will explore the chromatic options offered by local plants and dye dutch wool. You can choose to look at local plant dyes for a full chromatic scheme - starting from red, blue and yellow, as well as playing with natural patterns through eco-printing for texture. The third option is wood dyes and barks, exploring the more rural lab contexts.

Join us in the Waag to learn with us and explore the surprisingly beautiful palette of colors that our area offers us!

Wool Monday 3: DIY Little Wool Factories (Make) (23th May- 15.00-19.00)

Little Wool Factories are imagined as local spaces where people can process wool with accessible machines and tools. This day focuses on the “make” theme of our exploration by understanding a series of open-source tools. Learn which open tools are out there and how you could rebuild them for every stage of the wool chain, from carding to spinning, and weaving to knitting.

We invite you to join our lab-scale wool factory at the TextileLab Amsterdam. We will use as a departure point the colorful wool dyed on the second day of this series of workshops, then explore different techniques for carding, blending and spinning wool. A series of open source tools will be provided for participants to explore the techniques.
