De expositie vertelt een meeslepend verhaal van emancipatie, strijd en verzet vanuit het perspectief van Surinamers in Nederland. De vereniging heeft in haar honderdjarige bestaan vaak aan de voorhoede van de emancipatiestrijd van Surinamers gestaan. Personen zoals activisten Otto en Hermina Huiswoud, Eddy Bruma (van de culturele vereniging ‘Wie Eegie Sani’ die opkwam voor Surinaamse taal en cultuur) en kunstenares Nola Hatterman waren allen actief bij Vereniging Ons Suriname.In 2020 was het 45 jaar geleden dat Suriname in 1975 onafhankelijk werd, na een lange periode van kolonisatie door Nederland. De expositie toont hoe de strijd voor Surinaamse onafhankelijkheid is verbonden met een lange internationale dekolonisatiestrijd. De expositie toont ook onder meer hoe anti-racisme bewegingen van vandaag zijn verbonden met een meer dan honderd jaar lange traditie van emancipatiebewegingen in Nederland.

During the tour we take you into the hidden history of Surinamese and black people in the Netherlands on the basis of unique archive pieces.Expo Vereniging Ons Suriname: 100 years of emancipation and struggleAfter the tour in the archive you are free to visit the expo &#x27;Surinamese in the Netherlands: 100 years of emancipation and struggle&#x27;. The exhibition tells a compelling story of emancipation, struggle and resistance from the perspective of Surinamese in the Netherlands. In its hundred years of existence, the association has often been at the forefront of the emancipation struggle of Surinamese. People such as activists Otto and Hermina Huiswoud, Eddy Bruma (from the cultural association &quot;Wie Eegie Sani&quot; who stood up for Surinamese language and culture) and artist Nola Hatterman were all active at Vereniging Ons Suriname.In 2020, it was 45 years since Suriname became independent in 1975, after a long period of colonization by the Netherlands. The exhibition shows how the struggle for Surinamese independence is linked to a long international decolonization struggle. The exhibition also shows, among other things, how anti-racism movements of today are linked to a more than 100-year tradition of emancipation movements in the Netherlands.
