New pathways to Climate Justice beyond the walls of the ICJ. What are the roles of indigenous laws and traditional knowledge?

<h3>Event Overview</h3>The global climate crisis requires urgent and inclusive action rooted in justice and equity. Indigenous peoples, as custodians of traditional knowledge, possess unique cultural, environmental, and spiritual insights critical to addressing climate challenges. Indigenous laws and practices form a foundation for harmonious coexistence with nature and provide nature-based solutions that can complement international legal frameworks.In this context, the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion (ICJ-AO) on climate change represents a landmark opportunity to clarify the legal obligations of States under international law to protect the climate system for present and future generations. The ICJ-AO has the potential to reinforce and integrate the rights of Indigenous peoples, including their rights to self-determination, cultural preservation, and environmental stewardship, into global climate justice efforts.The right to self-determination, as recognized in international law, guarantees for Indigenous peoples the freedom to sustain their cultural identity, territorial integrity, and sovereignty over natural resources. Cultural rights, protected under instruments such as the ICCPR and ICESCR, further ensure the participation and preservation of Indigenous heritage and practices. These rights underscore the importance of integrating Indigenous perspectives in addressing climate change, safeguarding both their cultural legacies and the natural systems upon which all life depends.Through dialogue and engagement, this Hui (gathering) will explore how the ICJ-AO can serve as a platform to elevate Indigenous voices, strengthen international legal frameworks, and promote justice and equity in the global response to climate change.Please note that refreshments will be provided for. <h3>Objectives</h3>Highlight Traditional Knowledge: Highlight the importance of Indigenous knowledge and laws in informing global climate justice actions, particularly in the context of the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion (ICJ-AO).
