What is the science behind implicit or unconscious bias?

Our brain needs to process millions of pieces of information and make thousands of decisions each day. In order to survive the information overload, our brain uses cognitive shortcuts.

Cognitive shortcut are necessary for us to navigate our daily lives. But these shortcuts, however important they may be, do have downsides. They allow for implicit bias, which potentially leads to false assumptions, unfair treatment, and ultimately wrong hiring decisions.
