UBC RDM Workshop 2: Documentation Writing and ELN

Utrecht Bioinformatics CenterThe Utrecht Bioinformatics Center (UBC) performs life science research using big data analysis on DNA, genes, proteins and cells. By integrating data from various sources, we develop innovative methods that are at the foundation of solving of important problems in cancer genomics and molecular evolution. The UBC fosters and promotes the bioinformatics community at Utrecht Science Park.Data StewardshipThe Data Stewardship portfolio of the UBC contains regular open consulting hours on research data management (RDM) for members of the Utrecht bioinformatics community.For the first time, a research data management focussed workshop series consisting of four individual sessions will take place in fall and winter 2019.All Data Stewardship related events and services are provided by the Data Steward of the Center for Molecular Medicine of the UMC Utrecht, Jasmin Böhmer.

<H2>Shelves overflowing with stacks of lab-notebooks? Having a hard time retrieving old data or understanding codes in them?</H2>
<H3> </H3>
 
<H3>Presentation:</H3>
This session will briefly introduce you with a set of research data management essentials to apply immediately in your daily work; sketch the bigger picture about the transtition from data to knowledge, and finishes with the importance of provenance in scientific work and narrating resarch for future re-use.
Secondly, you will be familiarised with electronic lab notebooks. <A HREF="https://www.elabjournal.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">eLABjournal </A>and <A HREF="https://jupyter.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Jupyter</A> are the ELN's of choice for this session. 
 
 
<H3>Hands-On:</H3>
The first exercise offers you the opportunity to try out different strucutres of how to write a readme-file and possibly helps you find the most natural way of writing these for your specific type of research.
The second and longer interactive session readies demos for eLABjournal or Jupyter notebooks to get a feeling of an electronic aid and the potential benefits of switichng to a digital environment for documenting your work.
 
This session is wrapped up with a discussion and Q&A section.
