Invitation: Opening Another Island

Nieuwe Instituut is het nationale museum voor architectuur, design en digitale cultuur. Nieuwe Instituut houdt zich bezig met de grote ontwikkelingen in de maatschappij, zoals de krapte op de woningmarkt, de energietransitie, de opkomst van kunstmatige intelligentie, mobiliteit of het gebruik van de publieke ruimte. Ontwerpers, waaronder architecten en digitale makers, kunnen aan die ontwikkelingen een belangrijke bijdrage leveren. Nieuwe Instituut toont het werk van ontwerpers, brengt mensen met elkaar in contact, verzamelt, ontwikkelt en deelt kennis.

Nieuwe Instituut cordially invites you to the opening of the new exhibition Another Island by Janilda Bartolomeu on 4 December.

Join us to celebrate the opening of Another Island, the new exhibition by researcher and audio-visual artist Janilda Bartolomeu. Through this film installation, Bartolomeu offers a personal and poetic reflection on the dreams of the Cape Verdean diaspora communities in Rotterdam and Dakar.

From 18:00, you are welcome to join us for a drink and a bite, and accompanied by a live percussion performance, the exhibition will officially open. Janilda Bartolomeu and special guest Filly Gueye, visiting from Dakar (curator Programme at <a href="http://www.rawmaterialcompany.org/?lang=en" title="http://www.rawmaterialcompany.org/?lang=en" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">RAW Material Company</a>), will give welcome speeches at 18:30. Nieuwe Café will be open throughout the entire evening and will feature a live DJ set!<h4>About the exhibition</h4>Bartolomeu suggests that a new island emerges wherever the diaspora settles. Due to their sizeable Cape Verdean communities, both Rotterdam and Dakar in Senegal are referred to as the 'other islands' of the archipelago. The installation focuses on the dreams and imagination that connect the twelve islands. <h4>About Janilda Bartolomeu</h4>The film installation is part of the long-term research project <a href="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/articles/bartolomeu-vervolgt-onderzoek-kaapverdische-diaspora" title="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/articles/bartolomeu-vervolgt-onderzoek-kaapverdische-diaspora" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Another Island: As We Surrender to the Tides</a>. Bartolomeu is working on this project as part of her residency at the RAW Material Company in Dakar, where her work previously featured in the public programme <a href="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/events/archipelagoes-of-bond" title="https://nieuweinstituut.nl/en/events/archipelagoes-of-bond" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Archipelagoes of Bond</a>.
