Met trots kondigen wij aan dat cultuurhistoricus, archeoloog en schrijver David Van Reybrouck op 8 januari 2022 de Huizingalezing, de prestigieuze jaarlijkse lezing over een cultuurhistorisch of cultuurfilosofisch onderwerp van Universiteit Leiden, ook bij Framer Framed zal voordragen. De rede draagt de titel ‘De kolonisatie van de toekomst. Leven aan de vooravond van de klimaatcatastrofe’, en zal gehouden worden in de Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC).

Over de lezing

Hoewel de belangstelling voor kolonisatie de laatste jaren overal in het Westen groeiende is, beperkt die zich meestal tot het historische kolonialisme. De manier waarop we vandaag de toekomst koloniseren krijgt nauwelijks aandacht. Nochtans gebeurt dat met dezelfde meedogenloosheid en kortzichtigheid als waarmee in vroeger tijden andere werelddelen werden ingenomen. Tijdens de 50ste editie van de Huizingalezing staat David Van Reybrouck stil bij de manier waarop de mensheid momenteel toekomstige generaties plundert en verknecht. Het geweld beperkt zich bovendien niet alleen tot mensen, maar treft al het leven op aarde. Hoe kunnen we ons een betere toekomst herinneren?

Over de spreker

David Van Reybrouck (1971) schrijft toneelstukken, poëzie, proza en non-fictie. Van zijn boek Congo. Een geschiedenis zijn ruim een half miljoen exemplaren verkocht. Het boek won drie grote prijzen: de AKO Literatuurprijs, de Libris Geschiedenis Prijs en de J. Greshoff-prijs. Afgelopen jaar verscheen Revolusi. Indonesië en het ontstaan van de moderne wereld, een monumentaal werk waaraan hij meer dan vijf jaar werkte. Het is inmiddels genomineerd voor de Libris Geschiedenis Prijs 2021.

Over de CICC

De Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes is een samenwerking tussen de Indiase academicus, schrijver, advocaat en activist Radha D’Souza en de Nederlandse kunstenaar Jonas Staal, geproduceerd en ontwikkeld door Framer Framed. Het project bestaat uit een grootschalige installatie in de vorm van een tribunaal dat intergenerationele klimaatmisdaden vervolgt.

Living on the brink of the climate catastrophe at Framer Framed. He wrote the text as a contribution to Leiden University’s annual Huizingalezing. The event takes place in the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes, and will be live-streamed on Framer Framed’s Youtube channel.

About the lecture

Although interest in colonisation has grown throughout the West in recent years, it is mostly limited to historical colonialism. Little attention is paid to the ways in which we colonise the future. However, this is done with the same ruthlessness and short-sightedness with which regions around the world were invaded in earlier times. During the 50th edition of the Huizinga Lecture, David Van Reybrouck focuses on the way in which humanity is currently plundering and enslaving future generations. And further, the violence is not limited to humans, but affects all life on earth. How can we envision a better future?

About the speaker

David Van Reybrouck (1971) writes plays, poetry, prose and non-fiction. His book Congo. Een geschiedenis has sold over half a million copies. The book won three major awards: the AKO Literature Prize, the Libris History Prize and the J. Greshoff Prize. Last year he published Revolusi. Indonesië en het ontstaan van de moderne wereld, a monumental work on which he worked for over five years. Previously, Framer Framed hosted an interview with the author about Revolusi that can be viewed here (in Dutch).

About the CICC

The lecture takes place in the Court for Intergenerational Climate Crimes (CICC), a collaboration between Indian academic, writer, lawyer and activist Radha D’Souza and Dutch artist Jonas Staal, commissioned by Framer Framed. The project consists of a large-scale installation in the form of a tribunal for the prosecution of transnational corporations’ intergenerational climate crimes.
