Event description
Yugtu-an September 2021: Barangay: Sixteenth-Century Philippine Culture And Society by William Henry Scott Chapter 1 - 5

About this event

Mabuhay! WELCOME TO YUGTO BOOKCLUB! A BOOKCLUB CELEBRATING FILIPINA/X/O WRITERS ALL OVER THE GLOBE.

Thank you for being here! (Tagalog: Salamat dahil nandidito ka)

The word "Yugtu-an" is a "made up" word by the organizer to make the word a verb. It is from a Tagalog word "yugto" meaning act or stage. (may also mean chapter depending on the context)

Join us each month for stimulating and nurturing, informal (relax & friendly) discussion of books focussing on a wide variety of books written by Philippine-authors ranging from children’s books, history, case-studies, relationships, culture, health, poetry, real-life stories and classic literature.

Curl up on the couch, OR COOK WITH US (if scheduled), grab a snack and that "fita or skyflakes", pour themselves a glass of wine or "lambanog" if available ;), or just listen and learn with us!

WHY JOIN THIS BOOKCLUB? (click "join" to be part of the samahan/community)

  • Connection with Filipina/x/o community from all over the globe. This space is not your ordinary book club, we hope that this place can be your safe space too, to talk about current events in the Philippines and a safe space to reconnect to your roots (if you are a 2nd generation Filipina/x/o).
  • The book club also heartily welcomes Philippine languages and culture enthusiasts.
  • Accountability to keep you reading in your busy life.
  • Another positive thing for us all in these uncertain times.
  • An active community during this unpredictable year.
  • A resource to support your exploration of the book.
  • Facilitated discussion during our online session, with breakouts, if possible, to keep discussions small and intimate.
  • Attendees are encouraged to participate ANYTIME by asking questions, offering comments, and sharing resources.

BOOK OF THE MONTH:

These coming months we will be making an exemption. We won't be reading a book written by one of our "kababayan".

For the months of September-October 2021 we will be discussing Barangay: Sixteenth-Century Philippine Culture And Society by William Henry Scott

ONLY CHAPTERS 1 - 8 about Visayas

NOTE: Philippine-authored books are hard to find in Europe or maybe even in US or other parts of Asia or UAE.

We encourage you to purchase your book (if necessary) from an independent bookseller, or at our YUGTO ONLINE BOOKSTORE or borrow from the library or check an online archive. (Please let us support our locals and small businesses)
