Behind Closed Doors provides high quality, accessible services, tailored to meet the needs of all individuals, whose lives are affected by domestic violence and abuse.

Our training events are designed to raise awareness of domestic violence and abuse, and enable practitioners, professionals and volunteers to recognise the signs someone may be in an abusive relationship, to have the skills to ask the difficult questions and to know how to support someone if a disclosure is made.

We can also arrange bespoke training packages for employers.

75% of those experiencing domestic violence and abuse are targeted at work and it is often possible for perpetrators to use workplace resources such as phones, email and other means to threaten, harass or abuse their current or former partner/family member. The statistics speak for themselves. 1 in 4 women and 1 in 6 men will experience some form of domestic violence and abuse in their lifetime, which means it is likely that your workplace will have staff that have experienced or are experiencing it right now.

Mell Handley is a qualified and experienced trainer with many years’ experience teaching and training both in person and remotely. She has worked for colleges and Universities as well as delivering in-house training for employers.

Mell’s training always draws on her extensive experience in the health and social care sector, as she has worked in a number of roles supporting adults, children & young people through a wide range of difficulties. She has experience as a Safeguarding Officer, working with families who have been affected by childhood abuse. Since 2018 she has been part of our Prevention and Recovery Service (PARS) providing emotional support to service users who are recovering from domestic violence and abuse.

She has a BA in Psychosocial Studies, a Post-graduate Certificate of Education, and is currently studying for an MA in Psychotherapy and Counselling.
