Helen Alice Johnson
Helen holds a BA Combined Hons in visual Art and Art History and an MA in Contemporary Fine Art Practice.
Her work has been recognised internationally and she is currently short listed for the VAA Art International 500 – an inclusive international campaign celebrating the most promising and visionary artists from around the globe. She was also shortlisted for the VAA UK and International Scholarship Award in 2022 and has twice been selected by Saatchi Art Online as both Curator’s Choice and as part of a curated artist selection.
Dividing her time between Alston in the North Pennines and Les Chapelles in the Pays de la Loire, Helen brings a dual sense of place to her artwork. Her optimistic outlook on life is clearly reflected in her vibrant and celebratory landscapes, which speak to a deep connection with the natural world.
In Helen’s latest works, she delves further into the use of geometry and pattern, elements that have long appeared in her practice, but now take on a more central role. Her paintings explore a ‘thinness’ or a ‘space’ that is not quite corporeal and not quite celestial – a space that sits somewhere between landscape and abstraction, inviting a spiritual contemplation of the relationship between people and nature.
