mother tongues Glasgow
mother tongues is a 6-piece string band based in Glasgow, Scotland. Hailing from everywhere from Argentina to Finland (and many places in between), the ensemble tackles everything from bluegrass to Prokofiev. Based on Béla Bartók's principle of folk music as one's 'musical mother tongue', mother tongues seeks to create a beautiful, dynamic, and vibrant new language out of their respective origins and their classical training.
But what does all that actually mean?
We love music! We love each other! We love our instruments! We love a good tune and good laugh! We believe in a world where music is shared and enjoyed freely by anyone who’ll hear us. It’s our goal to let our audience into the little world each tune inhabits and keep the pieces we play alive and changeable and free. Music is such an important part of what it means to be human; we hope, in reminding everyone of our humanity, that we can make the world a little less dark, at least while the music plays.
