Vlaanderen staat voor grote ruimtelijke opgaven op het vlak van klimaat, energie, landbouw, mobiliteit en wonen. Daarvoor zijn heel wat transities nodig. Om die in goede banen te leiden, moeten we de ruimte slim gebruiken en zorgzaam omgaan met het landschap. Maar hoe doen we dat?

Hoe kunnen we de ruimtelijke kwaliteiten en het karakter van het landschap tastbaar maken? Welke waarden, elementen en kenmerken zijn bepalend voor een gebied? Waarom voelen we ons op de éne plek meer thuis dan op een andere? Hoe brengen we de bepalende elementen en kenmerken van een landschap in kaart? Hoe ontwikkelen we een instrument dat voor planners en ontwerpers de landschappelijke karakteristieken weergeeft?

Op donderdag 17 oktober 2019 organiseert de Vlaamse overheid samen met de universiteit van Newcastle een studiedag over landschapskarakterisatie.

In de voormiddag laten we ons inspireren door ervaringen van andere landen en regio’s. In de namiddag zijn er 2 parallelle sessies. U kan een lezingenreeks bijwonen over goede Vlaamse praktijken, ofwel u neemt deel aan workshops (in het Engels) om de internationale inzichten samen met ons te vertalen naar de situatie in Vlaanderen.

WORKSHOP ON LANDSCAPE CHARACTERISATION

Flanders faces big challenges regarding climate, energy, agriculture, mobility and housing. In order to facilitate the required transitions, we must manage and use our landscape with care. But how can we do that?

How can we make the spatial qualities of the landscape and its character tangible? What are the values, components and characteristics that define an area? Why do we feel more at home in one place than in another one? How do we map the determining elements and characteristics of landscape? Is it possible to develop an instrument that gives landscape managers and stakeholders a better understanding of landscape character in Flanders?

On Thursday, 17 October 2019, the Flemish government and Newcastle University are organising a workshop on landscape characterisation approaches. During the morning session inspiring examples of how landscape characterisation is implemented in the landscape policies of other regions and countries will be presented. The majority of this morning session will be in English.

In the afternoon there will be two parallel sessions. You can choose between a series of presentations on good practices in Flanders (in Dutch), or participate in group discussions to help think about possible landscape characterisation approaches for Flanders using the experience of the international experts.
