How can visual culture make a change in war? How does it have influence on the way we see and interpret wars?
The war in Yemen is still raging. The humanitarian crisis and political chaos have brought the country into a famine. Not a single child is spared: numerous children are starving because of the severe inflation. This was especially made visible by photograph of the 12-year-old Fatima Qoba, who weighed just 10kg when she was carried into a Yemeni malnutrition clinic. Visual culture is often used as a tool to highlight crises and tell forgotten stories. But how does visual culture help the children in war zones? And what drives war photographers to risk their lives for a photo?
We will discuss this and more with Wilco Versteeg and Lars Boering. Wilco Versteeg is a writer, photographer, and researcher/teacher at Université Paris Diderot and Radboud University. Lars Boering is director of World Press Photo and expert on war photography.
This lecture is free of charge. Afterwards, there will be drinks at Café Hemingway!

SIB-Utrecht is the student association for International Relations in Utrecht! We can best be described as a student association with a unique balance between intellectual and fun activities. Our weekly public Tuesday evening programme consists of an talk (NL or EN) and afterwards drinks at our local café!
Besides our weekly Tuesday evening programme we also have other activities organised by our very own wonderful committees and active societies! We are affiliated with the United Nations and currently have around 200 members. Our members have different study backgrounds and study phases, ranging from bachelor students university of applied sciences to master students from the university of Utrecht. We make multiple trips within Europe, but we also go beyond EU borders!
