Why Civic Engagement Matters — And How to Start Doing It Right
What does civic engagement really mean — and why should it matter to you?
In this interactive 1.5-hour session, we’ll unpack the concept of civic engagement: where it comes from, who it is for, and how it can make your research, teaching, or innovation more inclusive, reciprocal, and grounded in real-world impact.
You’ll reflect on your own position and motivations, explore how universities and knowledge institutions have historically engaged with society, and learn how to apply civic engagement principles in your own context.
Whether you’re just getting started or already experimenting with engagement, this session will help you define what civic engagement could look like in your work — and how to do it with care, purpose, and long-term value.
Session facilitator:
Tanya Yankelevich is Community and Programme Manager for Open Science, Citizen Science, and Civic Engagement at TU Delft, where she leads strategic initiatives, builds interdisciplinary collaborations, and supports researchers in working more openly and inclusively with society. With a background in international NGOs and international organisations like the United Nations, she brings extensive experience in stakeholder engagement, advocacy, and co-creation across academic, governmental, and civil society contexts.
